Thursday the 13th of January is the late night for the boat show and a popular night for London based sailors to meet at the Guinness bar!  There’s plenty to discuss and plan for the 2011 Calendar and a good opportunity to bounce ideas around both with 18 crews and other like minded sportsmen and women.

Come along after work to check it out Entry to the Show after 4pm is only £7, and with Thursday night traditionally seeing many exhibitors letting their hair down with parties on their stands ExCeL should really be rocking!  After 4pm tickets cannot be booked in advance and are sold on the door only.

Nick Press, Dan Phillips and Dave Ewings are waiting for their new Smeg-sponsored skiff to be delivered, but sailing a borrowed boat in today’s Mick Scully Memorial Trophy didn’t stop them from recording a very good victory on Sydney Harbour.  Press and his crew sailed consistently throughout the race in a southerly wind which varied between 10-18 knots.  Smeg (using the ‘Gill’ boat) defeated Matt Searle’s Red Claw by 2m10s with Yandoo (John Winning) a further 42s back in third place.

Jonathan Whitty’s Panasonic was fourth, followed by De’Longhi (Simon Nearn) and Gotta Love It 7 (Seve Jarvin) sixth.  The new Thurlow Fisher Lawyers skiff, skippered by Michael Coxon, grabbed a narrow lead from Gotta Love It 7 at the Clarke Island windward mark then established a big break over the fleet after the long spinnaker run to Obelisk Bay......

The Australian 18 Footer League 2010-2011 Season will commence racing on Sunday 10 October when the club conducts the traditional Alf Beashel Memorial Trophy race over a three-buoy course on Sydney Harbour.  A fleet of 16 boats will represent the club in what promises to be a high quality season with several teams capable of taking out championship honours.

The 2010 Giltinan champion Seve Jarvin will again be at the helm of Gotta Love It 7 with Sam Newton in the bow once more.  One change has been the inclusion of Scott Babbage from the former Rag & Famish Hotel crew.  Scott replaces Tom Clout, who moves to the new Rag & Famish Hotel crew, headed by Jack Macartney.  The new Gotta Love It 7 team has already tasted success as winner of the International Regatta at Lake Garda in June.

Michael Coxon, Aaron Links and Trent Barnabas have a new skiff for this season and will again sail for the Thurlow Fisher Lawyers sponsorship.

Report and Overall Results

The Australian arrived a stranger in town but made himself right at home with the familiarly frisky winds and tides and fog and even an unfamiliar mid-regatta heat wave to win the ninth annual 18ft Skiff International Regatta, hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club, San Francisco.

On his first visit to San Francisco, Michael Coxon overcame a stumbling entrance with five wins in the last eight races to hold off by one point another young Aussie, John "Herman" Winning Jr., who won three.

The Thurlow Fisher Lawyers team of Michael Coxon, Aaron Links and Trent Barnabas took out Race 15 of the Australian 18 Footers Club Championship on Sydney Harbour today, which also gave them an overall win in the series.

An almost flawless performance in the 15-20 knot North East wind saw Thurlow Fisher Lawyers finish 42s ahead of Rag & Famish Hotel , skippered by John Harris.

Gotta Love It 7, skippered today by replacement Andy Budgen, was a further 2m51s back in third place.

Fourth over the finishing line was Kinder Caring Home Nursing (Brett Van Munster), but Van Munster later withdrew from the race for failing to correctly round an earlier mark.

Report and Overall Results

The UK 18ft Skiff fleet descended on Hayling Island last weekend for the UK National Championships, sponsored by Carbonology and Predator Technology who are providing Headcam footage of the UK series.  There was plenty of sun, but not much wind, however the race team managed to squeeze 7 races with the available breeze providing close tactical skiff racing.  This National Championship represents the 2nd  of three important UK Skiff events before the Mark Foy Trophy takes place in Carnac at the end of June.  Teams were understandably eager to see whether preseason training and improvements had paid off.

The usual suspects quickly showed dominance, but it was a closely fort battle between the top teams .....

The third day started as the last two ones: sunny and with postponement! After the breeze started to build around 1 pm the race officer called the skiffs out for the start. When the first four teams were out on big rig it was already blasting and the forecast was even up to forty knots in the evening. Soon every of the four, Pica, the Black Dog, Hyde Sails and Magic Marine took their "Pitch Balls" in the Bear away and it became visible, it was too much for big Rig. After a fast skipper meeting

The first two days in Hungary on Balatonföldvar were absolute summer days, warm and shifty light winds. In this absolutely amazing chilling spot the Ten Teams from Uk, Germany and Hungary were hosted as friendly as last year. Red Bull as a sponsor and a local company named Efesk served Diner and the typical Red Bull Party and Music Mobil. Today there were two Bands playing live for the sailors leisure.
